Some scams are obvious, such as emails offering large sums of money to help transfer funds out of Nigeria, but more deceptive “patent trolls” have successfully preyed on the real estate industry for years.

REALTORS®, Brokers and Multiple Listing Services have paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in settlements and legal fees for alleged patent infringements on commonly used technologies like website tools and office scanners.

“Most of these (patent trolls) don’t produce anything,” said the host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight with
John Oliver. “Patent trolls just threaten to sue,” Oliver continued, “and believe me, those lawsuits add up.”
