AAR Opposes Mandatory Demand Charge for Residential Power Customers
Here’s how success happens
At the Arizona REALTORS® recent Spring Convention, local associations voiced concerns about a UniSource Energy Services (UES) rate case being considered by the Arizona Corporation Commission. The proposed rate case would impose a demand charge on both solar and non-solar customers within UES territory.
The demand-charge proposal assesses charges based on peak energy use, and not the total amount used during the month. While UES only serves Mohave and Santa Cruz Counties, Arizona REALTORS® are vigilant about issues impacting all Arizona renters and homeowners.
Arizona REALTORS® responded by filing an official letter to the Arizona Corporation Commission Docket opposing UES’s rate proposal. The letter expressed our concern that the proposal would establish a rate structure that is not only confusing to residential ratepayers, but would result in substantially higher electric bills for the ratepayer.
The Arizona REALTORS® respectfully requested the Commissioners to reject the demand rate proposal and adopt a sensible, fairer and more understandable rate design. In response to our opposition and public opposition, UES announced on Tuesday that it would withdraw its proposal and will revert to their original proposal and only pursue the mandatory demand charges for solar customers.
